I've been injured.  Now what?

If you've been injured, you need to be prepared for what happens next.

Take Photos

If you've been injured, take some photos of the scene if you can, or have someone else go back to the scene as soon as you can.  The pictures provide good evidence and can help you remember exactly where you were and what the conditions were like.  At the same time, it is a good idea to make sure to record information about witnesses, and report to the police if necessary.

Get Medical Attention

Whether or not you are immediately transported to a hospital or you are able to walk away from the scene, visit your family doctor.  Explain to your doctor what happened and how your injuries are affecting your day-to-day activities.  Try to ensure your doctor is taking good notes.  You must be an advocate for yourself to ensure you get the treatment you need.

Get Treatment

If your doctor recommends treatment, such as physiotherapy, x-rays, MRIs, or psychiatric assessment, be sure to get the treatment.  If you don't get the treatment, you create the argument that your injuries are the result of your not following the doctor's advice.  Be cautious about where you go for your treatment.  Go to someone you trust.  If your insurance company recommends a place for you to go, consider whether or not attending at that location is a good idea.

Claim Benefits

If you were injured in a car accident (even if you were on a bike, or a pedestrian that was struck by a car) you are probably entitled to benefits to pay for all or some of your treatments for the first two years after an accident.  If you are unable to work, you are probably entitled to further benefits too. Don't trust that the insurance companies will take care of you.  If you need help, contact me.
